Rubia cordifolia (commonly known as Manjistha) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine systems for managing various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. In Ayurveda, Manjistha is considered a potent "blood purifier" and is believed to help balance the body's internal systems, reduce inflammation, and detoxify the skin. Traditional texts describe its use for conditions involving redness, itching, and irritation, which align with symptoms of rashes and urticaria (hives). The rationale is that by purifying the blood and reducing "pitta" (a dosha associated with heat and inflammation), Rubia cordifolia can help alleviate dermatological symptoms.

However, the scientific evidence specifically validating its efficacy for rashes and hives is limited. Some laboratory studies show that Rubia cordifolia extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, which theoretically could benefit inflammatory skin disorders. A few animal studies suggest that it may reduce allergic reactions and histamine-induced inflammation, but robust clinical trials in humans for rashes or hives are lacking. Thus, while traditional use is strong and there is some biological plausibility, high-quality scientific validation remains insufficient at this time.
