Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sandy Everlasting (Helichrysum arenarium), also known as dwarf everlast or immortelle, has a long history of use in traditional European and folk herbal medicine for a variety of skin conditions, including rashes and hives. Traditional herbalists have employed infusions or topical preparations of Helichrysum species for their reputed anti-inflammatory and soothing effects. The plant contains flavonoids, essential oils, and other phenolic compounds, which are believed to contribute to its calming properties when applied to irritated skin.

However, scientific validation for its effectiveness in treating rashes and hives specifically is limited. Most of the available research focuses on Helichrysum italicum, a related species, and highlights general anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities in vitro or in animal models. Few clinical studies have directly examined the benefits of Helichrysum arenarium or its extracts for dermatological conditions in humans. As a result, while the traditional use is well established and supported by ethnobotanical records, robust scientific evidence remains lacking. Users should, therefore, approach its use with caution, and not as a substitute for proven medical treatments for rashes or hives.
