Verbascoside, also known as acteoside, is a phenylethanoid glycoside found in several medicinal plants such as Verbascum, Plantago, and Stachys species. Laboratory research has shown that verbascoside possesses notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. These properties have been suggested as beneficial in skin conditions involving inflammation, such as rashes and hives (urticaria).

In vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (animal) studies have demonstrated that verbascoside can inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress in skin tissues. Some topical formulations containing verbascoside have been reported to decrease inflammation and support skin barrier repair in preclinical models. For example, studies using mouse models of dermatitis found that verbascoside application reduced redness, swelling, and histological markers of inflammation.

However, while such preclinical data are promising, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence in humans specifically evaluating verbascoside for the treatment or prevention of rashes and hives. Clinical trials on topical products containing verbascoside are limited, and most evidence comes from laboratory studies or anecdotal use. Thus, while scientific rationale and some preclinical evidence exist, the overall support for verbascoside’s use in rashes and hives remains weak, justifying a moderate-low evidence rating.
