For the body system: Rectum
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Diosmin is a flavonoid compound found in citrus fruits and is commonly used as a phlebotropic agent to support vascular health, particularly in the management of chronic venous insufficiency and hemorrhoidal disease, which directly affects the rectum. Multiple clinical studies and meta-analyses have demonstrated that diosmin, especially in micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) formulations (often combined with hesperidin), is effective in reducing symptoms associated with hemorrhoids, such as bleeding, pain, and inflammation. The European Medicines Agency and several clinical guidelines recognize diosmin’s use for acute and chronic hemorrhoidal disease, indicating a moderate to strong level of scientific validation.
The proposed mechanism of action involves improving venous tone, decreasing capillary permeability, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects, which collectively help reduce the severity and duration of hemorrhoidal symptoms. While diosmin does not cure the underlying causes of rectal disorders, its beneficial impact on microcirculation and inflammation in the rectal area is well documented.
However, it should be noted that while evidence is robust for hemorrhoidal disease, there is less direct evidence for other rectal conditions. Most studies focus on short-term symptom management rather than long-term outcomes or prevention. Overall, the scientific evidence supporting diosmin’s use for rectal (hemorrhoidal) health is substantial, justifying its inclusion in therapies for this specific application.
