For the body system: Rectum
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and European herbalism. In TCM, the root (known as Di Yu) is used to "cool the blood" and to stop bleeding, with particular application for gastrointestinal and lower digestive tract hemorrhages—such as hemorrhoids and rectal bleeding. The herb is believed to have astringent properties, which help to constrict tissues and reduce bleeding. European herbal traditions also reference the use of Sanguisorba for similar astringent purposes, including diarrhea and wounds.
While there are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory, astringent, and hemostatic effects of Sanguisorba extracts, clinical evidence in humans—especially for rectal conditions—is lacking or very limited. Thus, its use to support rectal health is primarily justified by a history of traditional application rather than robust scientific validation. Overall, the scientific evidence is weak, but traditional use is well-documented.
