Allium tuberosum Rottl., commonly known as Chinese chive or garlic chive, has a longstanding history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting reproductive health, particularly in men. In TCM, it is frequently referred to as “Jiu Cai” and is believed to “tonify the kidney yang,” a concept associated with male vitality, libido, and overall reproductive function. Traditional texts describe its use in formulas aimed at treating impotence, premature ejaculation, and infertility. The seeds (Jiu Cai Zi) are especially noted for these purposes, being included in classic herbal prescriptions for reproductive and urinary issues.
However, direct scientific evidence to support these traditional claims is limited. A few animal studies have suggested that extracts of Allium tuberosum seeds may have androgenic or libido-enhancing effects, but these studies are preliminary, and rigorous clinical trials in humans are lacking. In vitro studies have identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that could theoretically play a role in reproductive health, yet the connection remains speculative.
