Evidence supporting the use of: Bovine liver
For the body system: Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bovine liver has a long history of use in traditional medicine and nutritional therapies to support reproductive health. This use is largely based on the organ’s dense nutrient profile, particularly its high content of vitamin A, B vitamins (including B12 and folate), iron, zinc, and other micronutrients important for general health and, by extension, for reproductive system function. In traditional systems, nutrient-rich animal organs like liver were considered beneficial for fertility and vitality. Some modern practitioners of ancestral or "nose-to-tail" diets continue to recommend bovine liver for reproductive support, particularly in women of childbearing age, due to its folate and iron content, both crucial for conception and pregnancy. However, direct scientific evidence specifically linking bovine liver supplementation to improved reproductive system function in humans is limited. Most clinical research focuses on the individual nutrients found in liver, rather than liver itself. For example, folate and vitamin B12 are well-documented to prevent neural tube defects and support fetal development, but these studies do not typically use bovine liver as the intervention. Thus, while bovine liver is rich in nutrients known to support reproductive health, its role as a specific supplement for this purpose is primarily supported by tradition and extrapolation from nutrient studies, rather than direct clinical trials.
