The use of the Chinese Pond Turtle (Mauremys reevesii, commonly called "Chinemys reevesii" in traditional texts) as a support for the reproductive system is primarily rooted in the traditions of Chinese medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the plastron (the bottom shell) of the Chinese Pond Turtle, known as "Gui Ban," is considered a valuable tonic. It is believed to nourish yin, strengthen the kidneys, and support the essence ("jing"), which is intimately associated with reproductive health in TCM theory. Gui Ban is often included in formulas intended to address issues such as infertility, irregular menstruation, or diminished sexual function, particularly those thought to involve "yin deficiency" or depletion of kidney essence. However, scientific validation for these uses is very limited. While some animal studies have investigated immunomodulatory or anti-inflammatory effects of turtle shell extracts, there is little to no robust clinical evidence directly linking Chinese Pond Turtle or its derivatives to improved reproductive system function in humans. The evidence available is largely anecdotal or based on historical usage rather than modern scientific evaluation. For this reason, while its use is well-established in traditional systems, the evidence rating for its efficacy in supporting the reproductive system is low (1 out of 5).
