Evidence supporting the use of: Coenzyme Q10
For the body system: Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is supported by some scientific evidence for its role in reproductive health, particularly in relation to female fertility. CoQ10 is a vital component in mitochondrial energy production, and its levels naturally decline with age. In women, especially those of advanced reproductive age, lower mitochondrial function in oocytes (egg cells) has been linked to reduced fertility and poorer outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Several studies have investigated the supplementation of CoQ10 in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) or those with diminished ovarian reserve. Some randomized controlled trials and animal studies suggest that CoQ10 supplementation may improve oocyte quality, embryo quality, and even pregnancy rates in certain populations, though results are not universally consistent and larger studies are needed.
In men, CoQ10 has also been studied for its effect on sperm quality. Meta-analyses indicate modest improvements in sperm motility and concentration in men with idiopathic infertility following CoQ10 supplementation. However, the evidence regarding its impact on live birth rates or broader fertility outcomes is limited. Overall, while CoQ10 is not universally recommended for reproductive support, there is a moderate and growing body of scientific evidence—particularly in infertility contexts—justifying its use in supporting reproductive health.
