Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Fatty acids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), have scientific evidence supporting their role in reproductive system health. In females, omega-3 fatty acids are involved in hormone synthesis and regulation, which is essential for ovulation and menstrual cycle regularity. Several clinical studies have shown that higher intake of omega-3s is associated with improved oocyte quality, enhanced embryo implantation rates, and a reduced risk of endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In pregnancy, sufficient omega-3 intake is linked to better fetal development, reduced risk of preterm birth, and improved cognitive outcomes in offspring.

In males, omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to improve sperm motility, morphology, and overall semen quality. Experimental and observational studies suggest that supplementation can reduce oxidative stress in the testes, enhance membrane fluidity of sperm cells, and boost fertility parameters.

Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses support the beneficial effects of fatty acids—especially omega-3s—on reproductive outcomes for both sexes. However, the exact mechanisms are complex and not every study shows benefit, contributing to a rating of 4 out of 5. Nevertheless, the preponderance of evidence supports the use of fatty acids, particularly omega-3s, for supporting reproductive system health.
