Formononetin is an isoflavone found in various plants, including red clover (Trifolium pratense), and is structurally similar to other phytoestrogens such as genistein and daidzein. Its use in supporting the reproductive system, particularly in women, is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine practices. Red clover extracts, which contain formononetin and related compounds, have been used historically to manage menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and menstrual irregularities. The rationale is based on the phytoestrogenic properties of these compounds, which are believed to exert estrogen-like effects in the body, potentially helping to balance hormone levels.
