Jungli-bean, commonly known as Mucuna pruriens or velvet bean, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for supporting male reproductive health. In Ayurveda, it is considered an aphrodisiac and is believed to enhance libido, sexual performance, and fertility in men. The seeds of Mucuna pruriens are often employed to manage sexual dysfunction and improve sperm quality. Several classical texts refer to its use in treating conditions like oligospermia (low sperm count) and low testosterone. Modern scientific research has provided some support for these traditional uses. Studies have shown that supplementation with Mucuna pruriens seed extract can increase sperm count, motility, and overall semen quality in infertile men. The active compound, L-DOPA, may contribute to improved hormonal balance and antioxidant status, both of which are important for reproductive health.
