Vitex, commonly known as chaste tree or Vitex agnus-castus, has a long history of traditional use for supporting female reproductive health, particularly in regulating menstrual cycles and alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Its use dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was associated with chastity and used by women for menstrual concerns.

Modern scientific research has provided some validation for these traditional uses. Clinical trials and systematic reviews suggest that Vitex may help balance hormones by acting on the pituitary gland to influence prolactin levels, which can in turn affect the menstrual cycle. Several randomized controlled trials have shown efficacy of Vitex extracts in reducing PMS symptoms such as breast tenderness, irritability, and mood swings, with some studies also supporting its use for mild menstrual irregularities. The active compounds are believed to include flavonoids, iridoids, and diterpenes.
