For the health condition: Restless Dreams
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) has a long-standing history in traditional medicine as a gentle sedative and sleep aid, often used to calm the mind and promote restful sleep. In various European folk traditions, chamomile tea is recommended for individuals experiencing restless sleep or vivid, disturbing dreams—sometimes referred to as "restless dreams." The plant's calming effects are attributed to compounds such as apigenin, which binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, eliciting mild sedative and anxiolytic effects. However, in terms of direct scientific evidence specifically regarding "restless dreams," clinical data are limited. Most available studies focus on chamomile's effects on general sleep quality, insomnia, or anxiety, rather than dream patterns or disturbances during sleep. Some small trials have shown that chamomile extract may modestly improve subjective sleep quality and reduce sleep latency. These effects could theoretically also reduce the frequency or intensity of restless dreams, but this has not been specifically measured or validated in published research. Thus, the use of chamomile for restless dreams is primarily justified by traditional use and anecdotal accounts, with only indirect scientific support relating to sleep improvement in general.
