Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bovine cartilage and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) have been used traditionally in alternative and complementary medicine for the management of joint disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The rationale for their use is based on the presence of structural components in cartilage, such as chondroitin sulfate, which are thought to support joint health and reduce inflammation. Historically, extracts from animal cartilage were promoted as "raw materials" to help rebuild cartilage or modulate immune function. However, scientific evidence supporting these claims, particularly in RA (an autoimmune inflammatory disease), is extremely limited and generally of poor quality. Most clinical studies and systematic reviews have focused on osteoarthritis, not RA, and results in those populations have been inconsistent or only modestly positive. Studies evaluating bovine cartilage in RA are few, small, and methodologically weak, showing little to no benefit over placebo. Major rheumatology guidelines do not recommend bovine cartilage or glycosaminoglycans for RA treatment. Therefore, while there is a traditional basis for their use, there is minimal scientific validation, and the overall quality of evidence is low.
