Carotenoids, a class of phytochemicals responsible for the red, yellow, and orange pigments in many fruits and vegetables, have been investigated for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may be relevant to autoimmune conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Several observational studies indicate that individuals with RA tend to have lower circulating levels of certain carotenoids, such as beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin, compared to healthy controls. Some prospective studies suggest that higher dietary intake of carotenoid-rich foods is associated with a reduced risk of developing RA, possibly due to their ability to neutralize free radicals and modulate immune responses. However, interventional studies in humans are limited. A few small clinical trials and animal studies have shown that supplementation with specific carotenoids can reduce inflammatory markers and joint damage, but these findings are preliminary and not yet robust enough to guide clinical practice. Major rheumatology guidelines do not currently recommend carotenoid supplementation specifically for RA management. Most of the support for their use is based on epidemiological associations and mechanistic plausibility rather than direct clinical efficacy in RA patients. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence, the strength of the evidence is limited, and more rigorous human trials are needed to confirm any therapeutic benefit.
