Shilajit has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is described as a "rasayana" or rejuvenator, believed to support overall vitality and address chronic conditions such as arthritis. Specifically, in Ayurveda, Shilajit is commonly recommended for musculoskeletal issues, including joint pain and inflammation, which are characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The rationale is largely based on its purported anti-inflammatory and strengthening properties according to ancient texts and practitioner experience.
However, direct scientific evidence supporting Shilajit’s efficacy for RA is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory effects of Shilajit or its constituents (notably fulvic acid), but these are mostly animal or in vitro studies and do not specifically focus on rheumatoid arthritis. There are no robust clinical trials in humans that directly assess Shilajit’s impact on RA symptoms or progression. Thus, while traditional use is well documented, modern research supporting its application in RA remains preliminary and insufficient for strong scientific endorsement.
