Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Smilax sieboldii, commonly known as Siebold's sarsaparilla, has a history of use in East Asian traditional medicine for various inflammatory conditions, including joint pain and rheumatism, which may overlap with symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The root has been used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic remedy. However, direct evidence specifically targeting rheumatoid arthritis is limited, and most references pertain to more general uses such as "rheumatism" or "joint pain," rather than the autoimmune disease RA as defined in modern medicine.

Scientific studies on Smilax sieboldii are sparse. Some phytochemical investigations reveal the presence of saponins and flavonoids, which may have anti-inflammatory properties. A few in vitro and animal studies on related Smilax species have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to clinical efficacy in RA patients.

In summary, while Smilax sieboldii is traditionally used to alleviate symptoms similar to those seen in RA, there is a lack of robust clinical research validating its effectiveness or safety specifically for rheumatoid arthritis. Its use for RA is thus primarily justified by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
