Rating (out of 5): 3
Cineole (also known as eucalyptol) is a monoterpene commonly found in eucalyptus oil and is recognized for its mucolytic, anti-inflammatory, and bronchodilatory properties. There is scientific evidence supporting its use as an adjunct therapy in the management of rhinitis, including allergic rhinitis. Several clinical studies and reviews have demonstrated cineole’s ability to reduce nasal congestion, improve mucociliary clearance, and alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory tract conditions.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Laryngoscope (Kehrl et al. 2004) found that cineole significantly improved symptoms in patients with acute rhinosinusitis, which shares pathophysiological features with allergic rhinitis. Further, a review article in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Juergens, 2014) summarized that cineole’s anti-inflammatory effects—mediated by inhibition of cytokine production and reduction of inflammatory mediators—are relevant to allergic and non-allergic upper airway inflammation.
However, while the overall evidence is promising, most studies focus on acute or non-specific rhinitis and upper respiratory tract infections rather than strictly on allergic rhinitis. More targeted trials are warranted to confirm efficacy specifically in allergic rhinitis. Thus, cineole is scientifically justified as a supportive agent for rhinitis, but the strength of evidence for its use in allergic rhinitis specifically is moderate.
