Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ephedra, also known as Ma Huang in traditional Chinese medicine, has a long-standing historical use for treating symptoms associated with rhinitis, including allergic rhinitis. In traditional practices, Ephedra is often included in herbal formulas aimed at relieving nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose, which are hallmark symptoms of rhinitis. The plant contains active compounds called ephedrine alkaloids, which are known to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to vasoconstriction and bronchodilation. This pharmacological action provides a plausible mechanism for its efficacy in reducing nasal congestion and improving airflow in individuals with rhinitis. However, scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Ephedra for allergic rhinitis is limited. Most modern clinical studies focus on the general decongestant effects of ephedrine rather than on well-designed trials for allergic rhinitis as a distinct condition. Furthermore, safety concerns regarding cardiovascular and central nervous system side effects have led to regulatory restrictions on Ephedra-containing supplements in many countries. Nonetheless, its traditional use is well-documented, and some older pharmacological studies support its short-term efficacy as a nasal decongestant. Overall, while the traditional evidence is strong, rigorous scientific validation for allergic rhinitis specifically remains moderate to low.
