Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus pentosus
For the health condition: Rhinitis, Allergic
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
There is emerging scientific evidence supporting the use of Lactobacillus pentosus for allergic rhinitis. Several randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials, primarily from Japan and Korea, have examined the effects of heat-killed or live L. pentosus strains (notably S-PT84 and b240) on allergic rhinitis symptoms. These studies report modest improvements in nasal symptom scores, reduction in serum IgE levels, and modulation of immune markers such as Th1/Th2 balance in individuals with seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. The proposed mechanism is the immunomodulatory effect of L. pentosus, shifting the immune response away from Th2-dominated allergy profiles and promoting regulatory T cell activity.
However, the evidence is still limited in scope: most studies involve relatively small sample sizes (typically 40–120 subjects), short intervention periods (usually 4–8 weeks), and specific populations. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews of probiotics for allergic rhinitis generally highlight a potential benefit but also note significant heterogeneity in probiotic strains, dosages, and endpoints, making firm conclusions difficult. L. pentosus is not as extensively studied as other probiotics like L. paracasei or L. rhamnosus for this indication, but the available data suggest it may help mitigate allergic symptoms through immune modulation.
Overall, the use of Lactobacillus pentosus for allergic rhinitis is supported by preliminary scientific studies, but more robust and larger-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and establish standardized protocols.
