Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ledebouriella, commonly known as Fang Feng in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long-standing history of use for treating conditions such as rhinitis and allergic symptoms. In TCM, Fang Feng is classified as a "wind-expelling" herb, which is believed to help alleviate symptoms associated with "wind" invasion, such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose—symptoms common in allergic rhinitis. Classical texts and many modern TCM formulae (such as Yu Ping Feng San) include Ledebouriella for supporting the respiratory tract and mitigating allergic symptoms.

Scientific validation for this use is limited. While some preliminary pharmacological studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties for extracts of Ledebouriella divaricata (the main species used), robust clinical trials in allergic rhinitis are lacking. Reviews of the literature indicate that while traditional use is well documented, the evidence from controlled human studies is insufficient to confirm efficacy by modern standards. Therefore, the justification for using Ledebouriella in allergic rhinitis is primarily based on traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
