Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as monk fruit, has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine primarily to treat cough, sore throat, and respiratory conditions. Its sweet fruit is used as a demulcent and expectorant. The traditional use for allergic rhinitis is less direct, but Luo Han Guo is often included in herbal formulas for respiratory health, which may encompass symptoms overlap with allergic rhinitis, such as nasal congestion and throat irritation. There is limited scientific research specifically investigating Luo Han Guo’s efficacy for allergic rhinitis. Some studies indicate that its mogrosides possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit inflammatory nasal conditions, but these studies do not focus on allergic rhinitis per se. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition in broader respiratory contexts, direct evidence for allergic rhinitis is weak. Clinical trials or robust scientific studies for allergic rhinitis specifically are lacking, and current use for this indication remains based on traditional practice rather than validated clinical research.
