Evidence supporting the use of: Phleum Pratense
For the health condition: Rhinitis, Allergic
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Phleum pratense (commonly known as Timothy grass) is scientifically validated for use in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, particularly in the context of allergen-specific immunotherapy. Timothy grass pollen is a major cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in temperate regions, and standardized extracts of its pollen are widely used in both subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Multiple randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that Phleum pratense pollen extracts can significantly reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis and decrease the need for symptomatic medications in individuals allergic to grass pollen.
Notable studies include those published in The New England Journal of Medicine (2006) and other peer-reviewed journals, which found that patients receiving Timothy grass pollen SLIT tablets experienced clinically meaningful improvements in nasal and ocular symptoms compared to placebo. The mechanism is believed to involve immune tolerance induction, reducing IgE-mediated responses to grass pollen exposure. Timothy grass pollen extracts are approved by regulatory agencies (e.g., FDA and EMA) as prescription immunotherapy for grass pollen-induced allergic rhinitis, further supporting their scientific validity. However, these products are not general herbal remedies but are highly purified, standardized pharmaceutical preparations designed for immunotherapy. Use outside this context (e.g., as a general herbal supplement) is not supported by evidence.
