Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pinellia ternata is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb widely used for its effects on the respiratory and digestive systems. In the context of rhinitis and allergic rhinitis, its use is primarily rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices rather than robust scientific validation. In TCM, Pinellia ternata (commonly referred to as Ban Xia) is included in various herbal formulas meant to address conditions described as "phlegm-dampness," which can manifest as nasal congestion, cough, and similar symptoms. Classic formulas such as Xiao Qing Long Tang and Ban Xia Hou Po Tang, which include Pinellia ternata, are sometimes used to alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis by "transforming phlegm" and "regulating qi."

However, modern clinical studies directly assessing Pinellia ternata’s efficacy for allergic rhinitis are limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, but these findings are preliminary and do not directly translate to clinical efficacy or safety in humans for allergic rhinitis. The majority of clinical evidence comes from studies of multi-herb formulas where the specific contribution of Pinellia ternata is not isolated. As such, while its use is justified by long-standing tradition, there is insufficient high-quality scientific evidence to robustly support its effectiveness for allergic rhinitis.
