Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Asarum sieboldii (commonly known as "wild ginger" or "saishin") has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and Japanese herbal formulas for the treatment of upper respiratory conditions, including rhinitis. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Asarum sieboldii is believed to "dispel wind," "relieve pain," and "open nasal passages," making it a common component in formulas aimed at alleviating symptoms of allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, and colds. Classic formulas such as "Cang Er Zi San" and "Xanthium Powder" often include this herb to address nasal congestion and inflammation.

However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for rhinitis is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest potential anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects of extracts from Asarum sieboldii, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Concerns also exist regarding toxicity, as the plant contains aristolochic acids, compounds linked to nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity. Regulatory agencies in some countries have restricted its use for this reason.

In summary, while Asarum sieboldii is traditionally used for rhinitis in East Asian medicine and there is some preliminary pharmacological evidence, high-quality clinical validation is insufficient, and safety concerns further limit its endorsement for this indication.
