Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium animalis has been investigated in several clinical studies for its potential effects on allergic rhinitis, a common inflammatory condition of the nasal mucosa. The rationale for its use is grounded in the ability of certain probiotic strains to modulate the immune system, particularly by influencing the balance between Th1 and Th2 immune responses, which are implicated in allergic diseases. A few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have evaluated B. animalis-containing probiotic formulations in individuals with allergic rhinitis. For example, a study published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy (2011) found that supplementation with B. animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 improved some quality of life measures in patients with allergic rhinitis during pollen season, though effects on symptom scores and immunological markers were modest and sometimes inconsistent. Other small-scale studies have reported similar mild benefits, but the overall evidence is limited by small sample sizes, heterogeneity in probiotic formulations, and short intervention durations. Meta-analyses examining probiotics for allergic rhinitis typically group multiple probiotic strains together, and the effects specific to B. animalis remain uncertain. There is currently some scientific support for B. animalis use in rhinitis, but the evidence is not robust or conclusive, and larger, well-controlled studies are needed to establish efficacy.
