Cineole (also known as eucalyptol) is a monoterpene oxide found in eucalyptus oil and several other essential oils. Its use in supporting or treating rhinitis, especially nonallergic or allergic rhinitis, is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence. Clinical studies have shown that cineole possesses significant anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and bronchodilatory effects, which are beneficial in upper respiratory tract conditions. Specifically, cineole has been demonstrated to reduce nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and improve nasal airflow in patients with rhinosinusitis and rhinitis. For example, randomized controlled trials have indicated that oral administration of cineole can lead to significant symptom reduction in acute and chronic rhinosinusitis, conditions that often present with rhinitis symptoms. The mechanism is attributed to cineole’s ability to inhibit cytokine production and decrease mucus hypersecretion. However, while these effects are promising, most studies focus on rhinosinusitis, and evidence specifically targeting rhinitis alone is less robust. There is a need for more large-scale, high-quality trials focusing explicitly on rhinitis. Nevertheless, current data suggest that cineole is a scientifically validated option for supporting rhinitis symptoms, primarily based on its anti-inflammatory and mucolytic actions.
