Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fang-Feng (Saposhnikovia divaricata) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been used for centuries for its properties to "expel wind" and "alleviate exterior syndromes." In TCM, rhinitis—especially allergic rhinitis—is often attributed to the invasion of "wind-cold" or "wind-heat" pathogens affecting the respiratory tract. Fang-Feng is commonly included in classic formulas such as Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder), which is traditionally prescribed to strengthen the body's defenses and treat symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, and runny nose associated with allergic and non-allergic rhinitis.
While there is a longstanding historical basis for the use of Fang-Feng in the treatment of rhinitis within the TCM system, scientific clinical studies validating its efficacy for rhinitis are limited and not definitive. Some pharmacological research suggests that compounds in Fang-Feng may possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which could theoretically benefit rhinitis patients, but robust, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the justification for its use is primarily traditional, with modest scientific support mainly from in vitro or animal studies rather than from well-conducted clinical trials.
In summary, the use of Fang-Feng in rhinitis is mainly rooted in traditional practice, with a low to moderate level of evidence based on scientific research.
