Evidence supporting the use of: Houttuynia
For the health condition: Rhinitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Houttuynia cordata, a perennial herb widely used in traditional East Asian medicine, has been studied for its potential anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties in the context of respiratory diseases, including rhinitis. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts of Houttuynia cordata can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce allergic responses. For example, some research has shown that Houttuynia extract reduces histamine release and suppresses eosinophil infiltration in rat models of allergic rhinitis. Additionally, there are small clinical studies, primarily from China and Korea, indicating that Houttuynia-containing formulations may improve symptoms of allergic rhinitis when used as adjunct therapy. However, these clinical trials often have methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of blinding, or use of multi-herb combinations, making it difficult to attribute benefits solely to Houttuynia. Despite promising preclinical findings, robust, large-scale, and high-quality randomized controlled trials in humans are lacking. The evidence, therefore, supports some scientific basis for the use of Houttuynia in rhinitis, but it remains preliminary. More rigorous research is needed to clearly establish efficacy and safety profiles for this use.
