Rating (out of 5): 2

Tylophora indica (commonly known as Indian Ipecac) has a longstanding history in traditional Ayurvedic and folk medicine for the management of respiratory conditions, including allergic rhinitis. The use of Tylophora for rhinitis is primarily based on its traditional application, where it is believed to exert anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects. Historically, the leaves have been chewed or used in decoctions to help relieve symptoms such as nasal congestion and sneezing associated with rhinitis and other upper respiratory tract ailments.

Anecdotal and ethnobotanical records from South Asia support its use, and some early clinical and preclinical studies have suggested that Tylophora may have immunomodulatory and anti-allergic properties, potentially through inhibition of histamine release and modulation of immune cell activity. However, robust, large-scale clinical trials validating its efficacy and safety in rhinitis are lacking, and most evidence remains preliminary or observational. The plant’s alkaloids, such as tylophorine, have shown anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies, which could plausibly contribute to symptom relief.

In summary, while Tylophora is traditionally used for rhinitis in Ayurvedic medicine and there is some supportive mechanistic data, high-quality scientific validation is limited. Therefore, its use for rhinitis is primarily justified by traditional practice with moderate but not definitive supporting evidence.
