Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita or German chamomile) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for various inflammatory skin conditions, including rosacea. Its application is rooted primarily in its anti-inflammatory, soothing, and mild antimicrobial properties, which have made it a popular herbal remedy for sensitive and irritated skin. Chamomile extracts, particularly in creams or compresses, have been used anecdotally to alleviate redness and discomfort associated with rosacea, leveraging constituents such as chamazulene, apigenin, and bisabolol that may help calm the skin. However, while there is some laboratory evidence suggesting anti-inflammatory effects of these compounds, clinical trials specifically addressing chamomile’s efficacy for rosacea are lacking or of low quality. Most of the support for chamomile in this context comes from traditional herbal practice and patient reports rather than robust, controlled studies. As such, while chamomile is generally considered safe for topical use and may provide symptomatic relief for some individuals with rosacea, the evidence for its effectiveness is limited and not definitive. Health professionals often recommend it as a gentle, adjunctive option, but it should not replace evidence-based therapies. Individuals should also be aware of potential allergic reactions, especially in those sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family.
