Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Camphor has a long history of traditional use in the treatment of skin conditions, including scabies, particularly in South Asian and some East Asian cultures. Traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani have used camphor in topical preparations to alleviate itching and irritation caused by scabies. The rationale for its use is primarily based on its cooling, anti-itch (antipruritic), and mild antimicrobial properties, which can provide symptomatic relief from the intense itching associated with scabies infestations. However, there is limited scientific validation for the efficacy of camphor specifically against the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, which causes scabies. Modern clinical guidelines from organizations such as the CDC and WHO do not recommend camphor as a primary or adjunctive therapy for scabies, favoring agents like permethrin or ivermectin, which have direct acaricidal effects. Some small studies and case reports have noted temporary relief of symptoms with camphor-containing preparations, but evidence is largely anecdotal and lacks rigorous clinical trial support. In summary, camphor’s use for scabies is supported by traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence, and it should not replace proven treatments. Topical application of camphor can be toxic, especially in children, and should be used with caution.
