Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fang-Feng (Saposhnikovia divaricata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used for its purported properties of dispelling "wind" and relieving itching and spasms. Its use in treating scabies is primarily rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where skin conditions characterized by itching—including scabies—are often attributed to "wind" or "wind-dampness" invading the body. Classical TCM texts and materia medica, such as the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing and Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica), mention Fang-Feng in formulas for various dermatological conditions, including those with itching or rashes.
Modern scientific validation for Fang-Feng's effectiveness against scabies specifically is very limited. While some pharmacological studies indicate that Fang-Feng has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antipruritic (anti-itch) effects, there are no high-quality clinical trials or rigorous in vitro studies demonstrating its efficacy directly against the causative mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) or its use as a primary treatment for scabies. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage patterns documented in TCM practice. As such, its use for scabies is best characterized as tradition-based, with supporting evidence rated as low to moderate due to the absence of modern clinical trials.
