Evidence supporting the use of: Acemannan
For the health condition: Scars / Scar Tissue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Acemannan is a polysaccharide found in the inner leaf gel of Aloe vera. Its application in supporting the healing of scars and scar tissue is primarily supported by preliminary scientific research, though the depth and quality of evidence are limited. Acemannan has been studied for its wound healing properties, including its ability to modulate inflammation, stimulate fibroblast activity, and enhance collagen synthesis—processes that are crucial in wound repair and potentially in scar formation and remodeling.
Several in vitro and animal studies indicate that acemannan can accelerate wound closure, improve epithelialization, and reduce inflammatory cytokines, which may theoretically lead to improved scar outcomes. However, robust human clinical trials directly assessing acemannan’s effects on established scars or scar tissue are lacking. Most human studies involving Aloe vera gel (which contains acemannan among other compounds) focus on acute wound healing rather than long-term scar remodeling.
Overall, while there is some scientific basis—primarily from preclinical research—for acemannan’s supportive role in wound healing, the direct evidence for its efficacy in treating or improving established scars or scar tissue in humans is limited. Thus, its use for this indication can be rated as having low-to-moderate scientific support at present.
