Evidence supporting the use of: Asiaticoside
For the health condition: Scars / Scar Tissue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Asiaticoside is a triterpenoid saponin derived from the plant Centella asiatica, which has been used traditionally for wound healing. Scientific studies have investigated its effects on scar formation and tissue repair. Preclinical research, including in vitro and animal studies, has demonstrated that asiaticoside can stimulate collagen synthesis, promote fibroblast proliferation, and enhance angiogenesis, all of which are beneficial for wound healing and scar remodeling. For example, studies have shown that asiaticoside increases the expression of type I and III collagen, which are crucial for dermal repair and scar strength. Furthermore, it has been observed to reduce inflammation and modulate the activity of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), a key regulator in the formation of hypertrophic scars and keloids.
Some small clinical studies and case reports support the beneficial effects of Centella asiatica extracts (containing asiaticoside) in improving scar appearance, particularly in post-surgical or burn scars. However, most human trials use combinations of active compounds from the plant, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to asiaticoside. Large, rigorous, randomized controlled trials specifically examining asiaticoside for scar treatment are lacking. Thus, while there is a reasonable scientific rationale and supportive preclinical data, the clinical evidence for its effectiveness in the treatment of scars and scar tissue is moderate but not conclusive.
