Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda, for various skin conditions, including the treatment of scars and scar tissue. Traditional remedies often utilize the sap, bark, or leaves of the banyan tree, which are applied topically to wounds or scars with the belief that they can promote healing and reduce scar formation. Ayurvedic texts sometimes mention the use of banyan extracts for their purported astringent, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to contribute to improved wound healing and scar minimization.

However, the scientific evidence directly supporting the use of banyan for treating scars or scar tissue is minimal. There are a few in vitro and animal studies indicating that certain Ficus species may possess wound-healing or antimicrobial activity, but robust clinical studies in humans are lacking, especially with a specific focus on scar reduction. Thus, while traditional use persists, especially in South Asian communities, the evidence base remains weak and is not substantiated by strong scientific studies.

In summary, banyan’s use for scars is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than by scientific validation, and the quality of evidence supporting its effectiveness is low.
