Evidence supporting the use of: Bee propolis
For the health condition: Scars / Scar Tissue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bee propolis has a longstanding history of traditional use in wound healing, particularly in folk medicine practices across various cultures. Its application for scars and scar tissue mainly stems from its recognized antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which were believed to promote better healing and reduce scar formation. While there are modern laboratory studies indicating that bee propolis may enhance wound healing by modulating inflammation and stimulating tissue regeneration, direct scientific evidence specifically evaluating its efficacy for established scars or scar tissue in humans is limited. Most of the available research focuses on acute wound healing rather than the treatment of mature scar tissue. Some animal studies and in vitro experiments have shown that propolis extracts can influence fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis, which are relevant processes in scar formation. However, robust clinical trials in humans that specifically assess improvement in the appearance or texture of scars with propolis are lacking. As a result, its use for scar support is primarily justified by tradition, with preliminary scientific support in related areas, but not enough to strongly validate its efficacy for this specific purpose.
