Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Benzoin siam (Styrax tonkinensis resin) has been used traditionally in various cultures, particularly in Southeast Asia, for its soothing and protective properties on the skin. Its primary historical uses include as an ingredient in tinctures and balms to protect minor cuts, abrasions, and sometimes to aid in the healing of wounds and scar tissue. The traditional rationale is based on its perceived ability to form a protective barrier and its aromatic, mildly antiseptic qualities. However, there is minimal direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for the treatment or improvement of scars or scar tissue. The resin contains compounds such as benzoic acid and vanillin, which have mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these are not well-studied in the context of scar remodeling or scar prevention. Most modern medical or dermatological guidelines do not mention benzoin siam as a recommended treatment for scars. Thus, its use for this purpose is justified by tradition rather than robust clinical research, and the quality of evidence is low, largely consisting of anecdotal reports and historical usage rather than controlled studies.
