Evidence supporting the use of: Henna
For the health condition: Scars / Scar Tissue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Henna (Lawsonia inermis) has been used traditionally in various cultures, particularly in South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, for its purported skin-healing properties, including the treatment or support of scars and scar tissue. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records document the application of henna paste to wounds, burns, and scars as a folk remedy, with the belief that it can promote healing and reduce the appearance of scars. The practice is largely rooted in the traditional use of henna for its cooling, soothing, and mildly antimicrobial properties.
However, scientific validation for henna's efficacy in treating scars or scar tissue is extremely limited. A few laboratory studies suggest that henna extracts possess antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, but robust clinical evidence or controlled trials supporting its use for scar management in humans are lacking. Most modern dermatological recommendations for scar treatment do not include henna. Therefore, while the use of henna for scars is mainly based on tradition, its effectiveness remains unproven by contemporary scientific standards.
