Evidence supporting the use of: Oligopeptide (unspecified)
For the health condition: Scars / Scar Tissue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oligopeptides are short chains of amino acids and have been investigated for their potential role in supporting skin repair, including the management of scars and scar tissue. Scientific evidence supporting the use of certain oligopeptides, such as palmitoyl pentapeptide-4 and copper tripeptide-1, primarily comes from in vitro studies, animal studies, and a limited number of clinical trials. These peptides are believed to stimulate collagen synthesis, improve extracellular matrix remodeling, and modulate inflammatory responses, all of which are relevant to wound healing and scar formation. However, while these mechanisms are promising, the quality and quantity of clinical evidence specifically addressing their efficacy in treating established scars in humans are limited. Most studies focus on their benefits in anti-aging and overall skin health rather than scar-specific outcomes. As a result, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for their use in scar management, robust, large-scale clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, the evidence supporting oligopeptides for scars can be considered modest but not definitive.
