Evidence supporting the use of: Serralysin
For the health condition: Scars / Scar Tissue
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Serralysin (also known as serrapeptase) is a proteolytic enzyme originally derived from the bacterium Serratia marcescens. Its use for supporting or treating scars and scar tissue is based on its enzymatic ability to break down proteins, including fibrin, a component of scar tissue. There is some scientific rationale for its use: in vitro and animal studies have shown that serralysin can reduce inflammation, break down excess fibrin, and potentially modulate tissue repair processes. A few small clinical studies and case reports suggest that oral serralysin supplementation may reduce fibrosis and support the remodeling of scar tissue, although results are mixed and the studies are generally of low quality with small sample sizes.
Systematic reviews and higher-quality clinical trials are lacking, so the current evidence is not robust. Some practitioners use serralysin as part of enzymatic therapy regimens for fibrosis-related conditions, but regulatory agencies generally consider the evidence insufficient for formal endorsement. Thus, while there is plausible scientific basis and limited preliminary evidence for the use of serralysin in managing scar tissue, the overall strength of the evidence is low, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
