Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Abuta, a common name for several species in the Menispermaceae family (notably Abuta grandifolia and Cissampelos pareira), has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in South America. Indigenous peoples have employed abuta preparations as part of wound care, including for scratches and abrasions. The plant is sometimes applied topically or used in washes believed to promote healing and prevent infection. However, there is very limited published scientific research validating these uses, and most reports are anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical surveys rather than clinical trials or laboratory studies. The traditional application may be due to observed anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial effects, but such properties have not been rigorously confirmed for the treatment of skin injuries in humans. Therefore, while abuta's use for scratches and abrasions is supported by traditional practices, the scientific evidence is minimal, and the effectiveness and safety for this specific indication remain largely unsubstantiated.
