Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a longstanding history in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and folk medicine for treating various skin conditions, including scratches and abrasions. Traditional healers have used poultices, pastes, and decoctions of Achyranthes leaves and roots, applying them topically to wounds, cuts, and minor abrasions to promote healing and prevent infection. The rationale in traditional practice is based on the plant's reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, as well as its ability to support wound healing.

While there are some preliminary laboratory (in vitro and animal) studies that suggest extracts of Achyranthes aspera may possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activities, these findings are not robustly validated in human clinical trials. Most of the support for its use in scratches and abrasions remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage patterns, rather than on rigorous scientific evidence. Therefore, the level of evidence supporting Achyranthes for this indication is moderate from a traditional perspective, but currently weak from a scientific standpoint.
