Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Blackbrush (Coleogyne ramosissima) has a history of use in traditional medicine by some Native American tribes, including the Paiute and Shoshone, for various minor skin conditions such as scratches and abrasions. The traditional preparation often involved making a poultice or decoction from the stems or leaves, which was then applied to the affected area. The rationale was largely based on empirical observation and the belief in the plant’s soothing properties.

However, there is very limited scientific research regarding the efficacy or mechanism of Blackbrush for treating skin injuries. There are no well-documented phytochemical analyses or clinical studies specifically validating its use for scratches or abrasions. Any purported benefit remains largely anecdotal, rooted in ethnobotanical practices rather than modern pharmacological evidence. Thus, while its application is justified by traditional use, the evidence supporting this practice is weak and has not been substantiated by scientific studies.
