Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

The Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolia) has a history of traditional medicinal use in South America, including for wound healing and skin conditions. Recent scientific research supports some of these traditional uses, particularly for treating scratches and abrasions. Studies have demonstrated that extracts from the Brazilian peppertree possess significant antimicrobial properties, effective against common skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes (see: Muhammed et al., 2018, Frontiers in Pharmacology). These antimicrobial effects can help prevent infection in minor wounds. Additionally, some in vivo and in vitro experiments indicate that the plant’s extracts may promote wound healing by enhancing fibroblast migration and collagen production, both important for tissue repair. However, while laboratory studies and some animal models are promising, high-quality clinical trials in humans remain limited. As such, the use of Brazilian peppertree for scratches and abrasions is supported by both traditional practices and preliminary scientific evidence, but further research is needed to fully establish its efficacy and safety for this specific use.
