Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Calyptridium umbellatum (commonly known as pussypaws) has traditional uses among Native American groups, particularly in the western United States. Ethnobotanical records indicate that the plant was applied topically as a poultice to treat minor skin injuries such as scratches and abrasions. For example, the Okanagan-Colville people used mashed leaves or the whole plant on cuts and sores. Such uses are documented in ethnobotanical sources, including works by Nancy J. Turner and various regional plant guides. However, there is no scientific validation (such as clinical trials or pharmacological studies) that confirms the efficacy or active compounds responsible for these traditional uses. The evidence supporting its use is therefore limited to oral history and ethnobotanical literature, and does not include rigorous safety or efficacy data. Thus, while the traditional use is well documented, its effectiveness compared to modern treatments remains unproven.
