Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Thoroughwax (Bupleurum chinense) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily used for harmonizing the liver, reducing fever, and alleviating certain inflammatory conditions. However, its use specifically for "scratches and abrasions" is limited in the classical TCM literature. There are some traditional topical formulations that may include Bupleurum as a minor ingredient for its reputed anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects, but these are not widespread or primary uses. Most traditional uses relate to internal administration for systemic issues rather than direct application to superficial skin injuries like scratches and abrasions. Furthermore, scientific validation for its topical use on minor wounds or skin injuries is minimal to nonexistent. The herb does contain saponins and other compounds with some anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, but there is no robust clinical evidence or clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy for healing scratches and abrasions. Thus, while there is a very limited traditional precedent for its use as a minor component in broader wound-healing formulas, the evidence is weak and not well-documented.
