For the health condition: Scratches and Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Dragon's Blood refers to the red resin obtained from several plant species, most notably Croton lechleri. This resin has a long history of traditional use for treating wounds, scratches, and abrasions among Indigenous peoples in South America. In recent decades, scientific studies have investigated its efficacy. Laboratory research has revealed that Dragon's Blood contains compounds such as taspine and proanthocyanidins, which exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Studies in animals and in vitro have shown that the resin promotes faster wound closure, reduces infection risk, and stimulates tissue regeneration. Human clinical data are more limited but suggest potential benefits in wound healing, particularly for minor abrasions and cuts. The resin's ability to form a protective barrier over wounds may also help prevent further contamination. However, large-scale, robust clinical trials are lacking, and more research is needed to firmly establish dosing, safety, and efficacy. Despite this, the existing body of laboratory and preliminary clinical evidence provides a moderate level of scientific support for the use of Dragon's Blood in managing scratches and abrasions.
