For the health condition: Scratches and Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Formosan Sweet-Gum (Liquidambar formosana) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where its resin and bark have been employed to address various skin ailments, including scratches and abrasions. Historically, preparations made from the resin (commonly known as "lu lu tong") were applied topically for their purported antiseptic and wound-healing properties. The rationale for this use is largely anecdotal, based on centuries of empirical practice documented in classical Chinese medical texts. The resin is believed to promote blood circulation and reduce swelling, both of which are considered beneficial for minor skin injuries in the context of traditional medicine.
However, scientific validation for these uses remains sparse. There are some laboratory studies indicating that extracts of Liquidambar formosana possess mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, which could theoretically aid the healing of superficial wounds. Despite these findings, there are no robust clinical trials or systematic reviews supporting the efficacy or safety of Formosan Sweet-Gum specifically for the treatment of scratches and abrasions in humans. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition and there is some preliminary biochemical evidence, current support from scientific research is limited.
